Iterations # 3: Open call for a research and collaborative artistic production residency in Hangar

Deadline: 2018 July 18th

Hangar launches an open call to participate in the second iteration of the European project Iterations. The call will select two artists: one artist living in Barcelona and another artist living outside Barcelona. The selected artists will join a group of other four artists and together will develop a collaborative art project during a 15 days residency at Hangar. The residency will take place between the 31st of October and the 14th of November 2018.

1. About the open call

In each iteration, a group of artists is invited to develop a collaborative artistic proposal, based on one or more of the results of the previous iteration. The first iteration of Iterations took place in Sicily within the framework of Trasformatorio. Prior to the residency in Barcelona, artists who participated in the first iteration will meet with the artists who will participate in the second one to give them the material that will be the starting point of the collaborative work that they will develop in Barcelona.

The institutions participating in Iterations are Constant (Bruselas, Belgium), Esc (Graz, Austria), Trasformatorio (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and Hangar.

2. About Iterations

Iterations is a European project committed to the future of artistic collaboration in networked digital contexts. Artists and multidisciplinary professionals come together to create speculative works that feed the imagination of possible ways of artistic collaboration.

Through a series of practical residencies and discursive exhibitions, Iterations offers situations in which artists experience collectively new forms of artistic work that create spaces for collaboration.

The project is structured around the conceptual model of “iteration” inspired by the recursive forms of collaboration as they exist in the development of open code software, the Iterations project applies the repetition and circularity of artistic methodologies, in which the result of one activity is used as a starting point for the next.

Iterations investigates the processes and motivations that invite artists to explore cooperation models and open digital tools. The iterations extend in art-related fields by addressing aesthetic, ethical and legal aspects of multiple authorship, the commons-based economy, and potentials political and social issues that are open to the artistic. Following the philosophy of the open code, the project establishes common interests for all activities.

Iterations builds a coherent set of practices, resources and documentation that will be accessible to specific groups (including artists, programmers and activists), as well as to a wider audience, allowing the results to have a wider reach beyond the limits of the project duration.

No Comments on Iterations #2: Trasformatorio Call

International (hack)lab for experimental and site-specific arts

April 20th to May 1st, 2018
Scaletta Zanclea (ME) and the City of Scaletta Zanclea we are proud to announce the fourth edition of Trasformatorio in Sicily.

CALL OPEN UNTIL 11 February 2018

What it is?

Trasformatorio is an international laboratory focusing on practices related to site-specific performance.

Born in 2013 as a laboratory for performance art and hacking, Trasformatorio is part of the experimental research methodology of, an international no-profit foundation and think tank based in Amsterdam.

Trasformatorio intends to develop original research, to produce and distribute innovative technical and artistic contents, to improve and invent new ways of establishing contact with social and environmental discourses.

Trasformatorio is aimed to inclusion, respect of the environment and of human and animal elements that interact with it. The laboratory is held within the territory that explores and uses transformation as a paradigm for work.

Trasformatorio is interested in working with forms of spectacles that can be prepared and delivered in any context, of the theatre and electricity grids. Spectacles that reflect on the microculture of the places they are developed in and from.

Trasformatorio is proposed to professionals: actors, musicians, designers, architects, set designers, video/filmmakers, dancers and performers, photographers, hackers, students of applied arts, theatre studies and fine arts, independent researchers and academics alike. An equal number of spaces are reserved for artists from Sicily and genders are balanced.

This edition will be held for the second year in Scaletta Zanclea, using the “borgo”, the mountain and the sea and the surroundings of the Castle “Rufo Ruffo” as basic materials for the artists work.

2018 What is going to happen?

This is a research that has to be conducted within an ethic exchange, responding to the specific environment (= people, history, space, nature) of Scaletta Zanclea.

The Location

Scaletta Zanclea (38°02′41″N 15°27′46″E) is a small municipality in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily about 15 kilometres (9 mi) southwest of Messina. Can be reached easily from Catania International airport with the train. The comune suffered heavily in the mudslides which devastated the area in 2009.[2]

The splendid site, close to the sea of the Messina’s Strait and surrounded by the Mountains is rich in historically and ethnographic connections that will inspire the artists in their transformations: as an example the medieval feminist story of Macalda di Zanclea, the game of chess, the story of Morgana the Fairy, myth and landscape as you can find hinted into the history of Macalda di Zanclea…

The 2018 Lab

Trasformatorio has been in Scaletta for the first contact in April 2017 so you would join a process in the making in its second iteration with some new artists and various platforms to experiment with.
Our eyes are on some of the following keywords:
Things that talk, animals that tell a story, radio-waves, walks, layers, movement, electroacoustic sounds, the poetry of objects, happy ghosts, dance with the wind, the music of hands-on rough surfaces…

see the shared map here:

Open Knowledge

The research performed by the Trasformatorio will be documented online and distributed on open licences.
Trasformatorio favours open hardware and software development, freedom of thought and open circulation of ideas. Eventual collaboration works born in Trasformatorio are only required to keep this open access policy and quote Trasformatorio in their communication.

Workshops and laboratories:

Application and development of personal skills on site-specific performance.
Trasformatorio ethics is that participants share and co-develop their skills into new ones. So all participants are therefore considered co-producers of Trasformatorio.

Trasformatorio 2018 will hold also the first iteration of the projectITERATIONS (
Iterations consist of a series of artist residencies, exhibitions, reflection meetings and exchanges, that take place between 2017 and 2020. Artists and cultural practitioners are welcomed in situations to experiment with and reflect on what the future of collectivity, sharing and working together in digital and networked contexts can look like.

The project is initiated by four organisations who have a clear affinity with open approaches towards art, technology and society, and who feel a shared necessity to research the conditions in which artists who use technology work.
These organisations are Constant (Brussel), Hangar (Barcellona), Esc (Gratz) and (Amsterdam).

BIAS 2018

Trasformatorio 2018 will trigger as well a collaboration with WISH – World International Sicilian Heritage that will be part of BIAS 2018 in Palermo. BIAS is the acronym of International Biennial Contemporary Art Exhibition of the Religions of Humanity and is a transnational exhibition of contemporary art organized in the historic centre of Palermo and in locations around Sicily. For BIAS theme we will select if there will be, projects in the theme of this year, that could develop further and become part of the 2018 exhibition. The theme of this year is: “The doorstep is the longest part of the journey”.

The practitioners’ explorations will be presented at the end to different audiences, in multiple ways, according to the content, character and state of development of ideas and performance material, without any obligation for the participants to show their work. The documentation will be shared from Trasformatorio site.

How to apply

Fill in the form and send your application, with the supporting material (you can also upload on this site with the tool offered in the form) and a letter of motivation at

Do it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and anyway before 11th February 2017

NB There are only 20 places available.

The candidatures will be chosen by Trasformatorio to fill the available places within an open internal process of selection.

What do we offer

The micro economy of the Trasformatorio requires involvement, elasticity and patience. Is also an experiment, a precious one in itself.

  • All activities and workshops on site will be free of charge for participating artists.
  • The city will offer free lodging
  • will take care of food expenses with a soul kitchen curated by Siddarthe and us
  • small budget for equipment and materials

It will be dealt with in an open process by the community to be sure all selected artists can participate. In any case, Trasformatorio will issue letters of invitation for the selected participants willing to apply for travel grants.

Trasformatorio 2018 is co-funded through a Creative Europe subsidy of the European Commission.

Iterations #1 Seminar

No Comments on Iterations #1 Seminar

Start: 10/24/2017, 10:00; End: 10/25/2017, 17:00
Place: Hangar, Barcelona

At the beginning of the Iterations project, we organise a seminar with the objective to create a framework of common ethics for the project. For doing so we will work together with practitioners working in the field of culture and economy of the commons, and open knowledge and cultural production. We will take as a starting point the three axes of the so-called triangle of the commons : good-community-governance.

Some of the questions that will be addressed during the seminar are : How are the iterations and the artworks will be documented ? Which kind of licenses we will use ? Who are going to be the people that we want to involve in the project ? How are the different people involved in the project going to interact/contaminate each other ? Which work methodologies (online and offline) will be used during the project for communication, documentation, management, decision making, etc ; How are the artists participating in the project going to be chosen ? Are we going to collectively manage the budget ? if yes, how ? How are we going to regulate the relation with the artists ?

Attendance by invitation only.
